If you have ever wanted to take along more clothes than will fit into your Sky or Solstice, try making this simple strap system for behind the seats. There are a number of possible variations on the theme but this will get your brain moving in the right direction.
Materials:
-
1 package of 1” wide double fold bias tape
-
¼ yard of snap tape
Optional:
-
1 pair Hanes Lace Top Thigh High nylons
-
Aleeene’s Super Fabric Textile Adhesive
Directions:
- Cut the bias tape to 24”. Tuck in and overlap the ends to make a 23-24” circle (for the Sky – test it for the Solstice).
-
Cut the snap tape so that you have two snaps on each piece. (Be sure to cut it as far away from the snaps you are going to use as you can to leave enough room to stitch it to the bias circle.
-
Stitch the female snaps to the bias tape. Stitch completely around the circle on the open edge of the bias tape.
-
Cut a 5” piece of the bias tape. Tuck one raw end under and stitch the male snaps to this end.
-
Tuck the other raw end under and stitch it behind the female snaps, making sure that, when snapped, there is a loop for a coat hanger.
-
Your hanger is almost done…however, when you place it over a leather seat, it will slip quite a bit (I don’t know about a fabric seat). If you don’t want it to slip, do the following:
-
Using the Lace Top Thigh Highs, cut an 8” section of the gripper stuff from the top. You only need to use one of the two lines that are on the nylons, so one pair of thigh highs will make LOTS of hangers.
-
I’d recommend using glue to attach the gripper stuff to the bias circle since I had no luck trying to sew it on. The glue works perfectly.
-
Place it opposite the loop for the coat hanger and let it dry completely before using the hanger so as not to glue it to your car seat.
-
We slip the loop of the device through the body of the hanger – not the hook – in order to raise the clothes up a little bit. The hanger hook will still be below the seat back. If you don’t care about the extra length, you can skip the snaps altogether and just make a loop with the bias tape and slip the coat hanger hook through the closed loop.
